The Air Element©
The second of the five element relationships is the Air Element. This chakra is located in the chest area of the body. Generally, it governs all movement of the body. Lengthening is one of its qualities. As a result energy currents are allowed to spread out and move.
Remember from our Ether discussion, each of the elements exhibits specific qualities of perceptiveness and are divided into three categories:
Mental (Mind)
Emotions
Physical expression
Be mindful of all three categories when you are working with any and all elements and chakras. Be aware of which is presenting into the energy field of your client the one most in immediate need for attention. Each person that comes to you will present one of these categories in their overall energy field. Through your evaluation of this client you will be able to determine whether you need to begin with their mind energy, emotional energy or physical energy field. It is very important to grasp a better understanding of how these qualities are represented in all life.
Since thought is also movement, air governs mental activity and the thought process. In addition it governs movement in our emotional life and its internal physiology.
In nature, the air element, in its positive pole, resembles a strong, gusty and blustery wind. This results in turbulence and unpredictability of movement with the extreme case being a tornado or hurricane. In the neutral pole, it is calm, steady, gentle breeze that results in relief and refreshment. The negative pole is like a day of hot, sticky, inert air resulting in stagnation and heaviness. Movement becomes labored, exhausting and limited if your system remains in the negative zone of Tamas energy.
Since this chakra, or energy vortex, is located in the chest area, it governs the emotional qualities that arise in relationship to this center. This includes the two extremes of desire and attachment. It stimulates the desire to draw something towards you and the aversion or hate, the desire to push something away. This is the center where emotions are governed.
As we work with our clients, we find that thoughts and emotions become internalized and stuck due to a highly charged emotional or traumatic situation. When this situation becomes generalized, locked in, or held in place, unwanted physical patterns emerge. This results in energetic and physical imbalances. Physical movement lessens. Holding back thoughts and emotions that need to be expressed can be suppressed into the body creating imbalances in the energy field and physical plane. Thoughts and emotions step down and condense into physical patterns according to subtle level energy patterns. When there is imbalance in the energy patterns, step down of thoughts and emotions from the subtle level become locked and imprisoned as this imbalance is projected into the physical body. You become your thoughts. If you “think” a certain situation in your life limits you, then lack of movement around that issue is manifested Energy can bring either bring freedom or imprisonment.
When the heart chakra closes down, receiving and giving love becomes more difficult on an emotional level. Physically, this emotion pattern may be visible in the positive pole of the heart area as; (1) tense shoulders, (2) a contacted diaphragm or (3) collapsed chest. In the neutral pole, physical manifestations may be seen in the kidney area (kidney stones), colon (transverse) problems, back pain or congested ribs. In the negative pole, physical manifestations of the imbalance may appear as poor circulation and varicosity (swelling) or cramping tight calves. This can manifest into inflammation of the plantar in the feet, resulting in restricted movement.
All elements, with one exception, have a triune energetic relationship as the body is weaving a physical being. In other words there is a positive, neutral and negative charge in the body that helps to balance manifestation in the chakra. When the three charges of electromagnetic energy present harmony, then the physical, emotional and mental body also express balance and harmony. Triune areas are usually found on the anterior of the body. But, the Air Element has both a posterior and anterior triad.
On the anterior, the positive pole is the clavicle, chest/lungs; the neutral pole is the lower rib cage/transverse colon; and the negative pole is the calves. On the posterior, the shoulders are the positive pole; the kidneys the neutral pole; and the upper ankles are the negative pole. The astrological sign Gemini governs the positive Air pole. Libra governs the neutral pole and Aquarius governs the negative pole. (Bodywork to balance this elemental chakra will be explained later.) Suffice it to know that the air triad reflex points, and their relationships, allows the practitioner flexibility in opening up blockages and balancing the energy flow in the client’s air element through various air element reflex techniques.
Remember that every activity in the body that has movement, and all do, must in some way have an air element aspect attached to it. Imbalances in the air element affect not only the other energetic poles associated with the air element but also all relationships that it governs by its quality of movement through the other elements. Therefore, challenges with the heart, lungs, kidneys and calves may appear in relationship to the air element. The challenge may also relate to an imbalance in one of the other element systems. For example, although a lung problem may be associated with the air element, it may crossover into the water element through the formation of mucus and fluids in the lungs. If the mucus becomes hardened, then the Earth Element is influencing the process and activity of the Air Element. Imbalances are not just in a single element, but are apparent between any and all other elements.
Description
The air “person” is generally considered to have a “type A” personality and tends to be on the anxious, nervous side, a worrier, fearful, hard driven, arrogant, seemingly over confident, talks a lot without saying much, compulsive, hyperactive, low self-esteem, takes on too many responsibilities and is too “puffed-up” (proud), or “inflated/deflated” ego. In body structure, they tend to be defined in such terms as light, tall, thin and wiry.
When this elemental chakra is in balance, the “air person” will be able to give, receive and take, have the ability to be appropriately vulnerable. They are able to set his/her own emotional boundary. They show flexibility and breathe more deeply and fully without physical restrictions.

Air Chakra Elemental Triune Balance©

1. Client lies supine. Contact a bilateral hold on the feet. Listen. Proceed by holding the elemental “Air” toes of your client. Listen. Gently release the client’s right “Air” toe but continue to keep contact with their left “Air” toe as you reposition your body on the client’s left side. Throughout the protocol notice if one of the forces of rajas or tamas, or even sattva, is over-forcing the other charges. The goal is at each contact to bring balance to the gunas of rajas, tamas and sattva. Listen while holding each contact and at each transition point. Observe all clues you are given.
2. With you upper hand enfold around the left ankle, stimulate (rajas) the left “Air” toe as you hold the ankle in sattva. Listen. Then hold both in sattva. Next make a tamas contact on the toe as you hold the ankle in sattva. Listen. Then both contacts are held in sattva. Listen. With your intent visualize balance in the contact and permit the energy to move superior.
3. Listen. Stimulate (rajas) the ankle while your toe contact is holding sattva. Hold both in sattva. Then with your full hand around the ankle, make a tamas contact. Each time directing the energy pedal. Next hold both contacts in sattva to allow the system and the field of energy to come into balance, an awareness of infilling.
4. Gently and simultaneously release both contacts. Reposition your hands and body superior. Your lower hand takes the position on the ankle, replacing your upper hand. Your upper hand contacts the client’s respiratory diaphragm, the base of the ribs. This is a full hand transverse contact. Hold both in sattva and LISTEN to the energy. Is one of the gunas over-powering the other? Your goal is to bring balance into the field of energy.
5. Your lower hand can move from the ankle contact up to mid calf and back down, investigating places of blocked energy that “call” your attention. Your upper hand contact remains sattva while your lower hand is searching for clues that reveal energy imbalances in the Air element‘s negative charged pole. When you find a point of imbalance engage the three gunas to bring balance into the field of energy. Then hold in sattva, both contacts.
6. After you have released as many blocks as possible in the negative zone of the Air elemental chakra, focus on the energy of the neutral zone (the base of the ribs or diaphragm). All along the diaphragm most of us hold energy that we have difficulty either transitioning into the body or back to Source. So, many points of blockage may reveal energy imbalances to you as you move east to west on the diaphragm on the side you are working. Facilitating the gunas bring the zone into energetic and physical balance. Listen.
7. When you allow the area to experience as much balance of energy as it is ready to integrate, reposition your hands and body superior as your lower hand replaces your upper hand on the diaphragm and your upper hand is positioned transverse on the clavicle of the side your are working. Hold both contacts in sattva as you listen to the quality of the energy. Observe and determine if one gunas is trying to over-powering the other.
8. As you did in the previous step, discover areas along the diaphragm where blockages lie hidden. As you move transverse from east – west along the diaphragm, hold the clavicle contact in sattva. After you have found as many points to release as you are allowed, hold both points in sattva.
9. Next focus your attention on the positive zone of the Air elemental chakra. Moving from the center of the clavicle toward the end, proximal, of the shoulder investigate points where energy may be blocked. This may be expressed with tenderness and/or tightness of the tissue along the top and bottom side of the clavicle of your client. Listen. Facilitate the qualities of the gunas to permit energetic and physical balance at each point of tension. Finish this Triune Balance of the Air elemental protocol by holding both contacts in sattva.
10. The final contact is to hold on the same side the client’s Air finger and Air toe. Listen to the energetic and physical systems. This is basically a sattva contact. But if you feel the “call” to stimulate the digits of either the hand or foot by facilitating the gunas, do so. Remember to always end with a sattvic hold.
11. Move To the client’s other side and complete the entire protocol ending at the head of the client’s by holding both hands on the shoulders. Listen. Observe.

The Anatomy of Breath-Air©
Almost every major religion teaches the importance of “breath.” In the first couple of chapters of the Book of Genesis, we can read that God “breathed” into humans the “breath of life.” The actual wording is “and God breathed into his (man) nostrils the breath of life: and man became a living soul.”
As instantly as an electrical chord is plugged into an electrical wall unit, the appliance on the other end of the chord becomes a living, working, electrical appliance. At first glance, it has all the appearance of a useful object, but does not realize its fullness of potentiality until it is connected to a live circuit of energy.
The electrical unit that plugs us into THE SOURCE is breath. Once breath is breathed into our bodies, then we become living, working, functional, useful beings or bodies. It is through this breath that we make a spiritual contact and a physical (earthly) connection. Our bodies are wonderfully molded pieces of clay, but the bodies’ real beauty is only evident when we experience breath for the first time.
Breath not only connects us with Spirit; it also connects us with Mother Earth, with our environment. The Hermetic Principle, “As Above So Below” becomes more evident. Breath is our connection with nature. Through breath we take into our bodies the elements, particles, molecules of our Earth’s atmosphere. Through breath we become one with nature.
Dr. Stone called breath the “lost chord” in Nature and in man’s consciousness. It is the one energy in all of life that flows through the brain and the nervous system of man. It is through breath that we become a living, individual soul.
Visualize upon the Earth, loose dust . The dust is just lying on the ground. But what happens when the heat of the “fiery” sun expands air in the dust’s atmosphere; and this heated air meets the air that was influenced by the cool air of the moon’s energy? Wind is manifested and storms can arise. The dust then takes flight and has movement. The dust is affected by the energy stimulus of wind, like breath, and now takes on living, moving attributes.
Breathing is the process by which air passes into and out of the lungs to allow the blood to take up oxygen and dispose of carbon dioxide. Breathing is controlled by the respiratory center in the brain stem. There is no conscious effort to perform the involuntary the process of inhaling and exhaling air. But there is a voluntary control of the depth and the rate of breathing.
During exercise, when the heart and muscles need more oxygen, reflexes lead to a rapid increase in the breathing rate. This rate of breathing in an adult can vary between 13-17 breaths per minute, at rest, and up to 80 breaths per minute during vigorous activity.
The respiratory system includes the air passages, nose, mouth, pharynx, trachea and bronchial tubes, which leads to the lungs. Respiration is the process of inhaling and exhaling air, resulting in an exchange of gases between the blood and the air sacs.
During inhalation, air is brought into the body through the nose or mouth, to millions of balloon-like sacs in the lungs. As the inhaled air journeys into the body and passes through the pharynx, trachea and bronchial tubes, the air is warmed and moistened. Oxygen then passes through the thin walls of these minute sacs into the blood stream, thus providing oxygen and nutrients to the body’s structural system, the cells.
As the body inhales and exhales, the diaphragm is extremely important. It is the principle muscle of breathing. With each inhalation, the chest expands and the diaphragm is pulled down. This causes the lungs to draw in air. During exhalation, the chest contracts and the diaphragm pushed upward, thus forcing air out of the lungs. By permitting the lungs greater expansion and contraction ability, the ribs, sternum and clavicle play an important role in breathing process.
In addition to the diaphragm, there are other muscles that facilitate breath. For inspiration the external intercostals (EI) and the scalene are necessary. The EI are active in vigorous inspiration, they move the anterior ends of the ribs and the sternum upward and forward, increasing the depth of the thoracic cavity from front to back. The scalene are also active in vigorous inspiration as they pull the first and second ribs upward.
There are other muscles that direct expiration. In quiet respiration, elastic forces from the abdominal wall, costal cartilage and the lungs produce expiration passively. Internal Intercostals are active in vigorous expiration; they move the anterior ends of the ribs and sternum downward and backward, reducing the depth of the thoracic cavity from front to back. The Muscles of the Anterior Abdominal Wall are important for active and forced expiration. They increase the pressure inside the abdominal cavity, forcing the diaphragm upward.
Secondary muscles that assist breathing are the trapezius, pectoralis minor, serratus, lats, rhomboids and the sternocleidomastoid.
Air, and its latent energy, is the life giver to every cell in the human body. This is because of the exchange of energy flow created by the intake of air (oxygen) and the complimentary muscles, bones and organs that assist the process. This process of breathing connects every particle to the whole. It sends vital energy to every cell in the body through the blood circulatory system.
Dr. Stone said that the vital energy of man is a combination of breath-air (warmth or fire of the sun) and fluids-water (flowing through our earthy nature). He stated that these energy essences lie hidden in the cosmic air. Without these, the body of earthiness and matter cannot live, move or be a vehicle for the consciousness within, which is the living soul in the body.

The Importance of the Brachial Plexus©
Nerves from the spinal cord branch off to help send and receive messages to and from the body. These nerves move out from each vertebrae along the spine. In the neck there are seven spinal vertebrae. These are referred to as the cervical spine. The vertebrae closest to the base of the skull is cervical number one (C1). C7, cervical number 7 connects the neck with the shoulder area. This is the vertebrae that feels like a knot or bump at the top of your shoulders.
The union of the four nerves of the lower cervical vertebrae (C4, C5, C6 & C7) and first thoracic (T1) nerve forms the brachial plexus. It extends from the lower part of the side of the neck to the area just below the armpit. It covers a very broad area across the back and from the top of the shoulders down below the scapula to the mid-back. Also it influences the front of the upper body out to the shoulders and chest muscles, especially the pectoralis minor. Restrictions and constrictions frequently affect the blood and nerve supply to the area.
In a severe illness there is a lack of “life force” in action or movement. The severity is measured by the degree of obstruction of the life current. Life current can be released most effectively and simply with a brachial plexus protocol.
What is life current? There are three principles that unite in the heart to form, what Dr. Stone called, the mystery of the “Holy Grail.” This is known as the life principle, or current, in the human body. This is the place where the principles of Air, Fire and Water cross. Dr. Stone referred to this area as “natures mixing bowl” of life’s forces and the law of Polarity.
Blood is circulated through the body as Polarity energy comes into action stimulating the heart to move vital fluid throughout the entire body. Blood bathes all cells with its healing and regenerative energy. Blood is infused with the energy of the first of these three principles. This represents the watery form of matter and the principle of water.
The air principle is represented by the bodily function of respiration. As air, or oxygen, is breathed in, it is cool and refreshing. As it continues throughout the respiration process it is heated and agitated by the fire of life and emotion. This represents the principle of fire. The brachial plexus is the motor-respiratory center that governs these functions and this Principle of Polarity.
As you notice, many people seem to experience immobility of the chest and shoulder area. You will/may notice that their chest is caved in and their shoulders encase the front of their body. They have the appearance of a turtle trying to get into their shells for safety and protection. Their pectoral muscles are concave and their sternum pushes deeply into the middle of their chest cavity. It seems as though they have a steel band anchored around their upper torso. Their emotional-mental state inhibits the flow of energy in their body creating additional stress, tension and exhaustion.
In acute illness, according to Dr. Stone, the brachial plexus is the general keynote to health and recovery. The sicker a person seems to be the tighter are their shoulder blades “glued” to their ribs.
A contemporary doctor of Dr. Stone’s found the importance of the brachial plexus in his research and used it in his unique way. He went to Africa to hunt those wonder beasts of the jungle, the lion. He found that if he aimed at their brachial plexus instead of the heart or the head, instant death occurred. This again proved the principle of the mainspring of this triple energy in action. NO RESPIRATION results in NO LIFE, NO MOTION. The brachial plexus governs this vital life center, which is more easily accessible under the shoulder blades than at the spinal centers.
For our clients who are restricted in their chest area, we can assist in encouraging life in them. According to Dr. Stone, by releasing tension in the motor field, and lifting the scapula, it is like giving wings to a bird. Life soars when the wings move.
By opening the wings and taking flight we open ourselves to greater intake of air, oxygen, or Prana. In Polarity Therapy training, we teach that there is a triune force of energy in everything. The positive pole of this energetic phenomenon is the life in the breath, plus the heat as a fiery conveyor. The negative pole is the blood, the watery liquid conveyor. The neutral pole of this vital energy is in the oxygen in the blood.
As we stimulate the brachial plexus, we assist in removing life restrictions in those to who we touch. We allow them to experience the triple life principle that takes place in their bodies, through BREATHING in oxygen, heating the blood and circulating it and distributing oxygen throughout the body to every cell. As we release carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere, we complete the full cycle that unites us with nature and our environment.

Energy Work for Brachial Plexus
A. Refer to handout for Chart number 36. (Scapula Lift for Brachial Plexus Release.)
1. With your client lying on their right side, stand behind their back.
2. Place both hands on your client’s hips and shoulder. Observe and listen.
3. Place your left hand on the client’s anterior left shoulder, where the arm attaches to the clavicle. Your right hand is placed below the client’s left scapula.
4. Begin to gently rotate the shoulder in all directions to increase relaxation in this area. After a few minutes maintain a sattvic hold. Observe and listen.
5. With your left hand maintaining the same shoulder position, your right fingers gently go under the spine of the scapula. Gently, give the scapula a pull up and away from the client’s ribs. Slowly move the scapula in all directions until relaxation occurs. End with a sattvic hold.
6. Have the client lie face up and work the big toe and arch of the left foot. (Should you prefer, you may begin with the big toe and arch work.) This helps to release blocks in the negative pole.
7. Have your client lie on their left side and follow the same procedures as above.
B. Brachial Plexus Release (Option 1)
1. Client is positioned face up. Begin this session with a gentle occipital pull.
2. Next move to your client’s left side. Slide your hands, one at a time under the scapula and back shoulder area of your client. Gently move the contacted area in all directions to assist relaxation in your client.
3. After a few minutes of sattvic hold, push your hands toward your client’s vertebrae spine and then pull your hands back toward you, using the ridge (spine) of the scapula as a grip. Continue this movement until muscles of the back begin to relax, always stopping at the scapula. With each pull toward you, begin to lift your fingers and try to get deeper under the scapula.
4. After a few pulls toward you, you may begin to feel the scapula relax. Connect your fingers under their scapula and pull it toward you until your client releases tension in the area.
5. Relax your pull and hold sattvic.
6. Leave your right hand under the scapula (if your are on their left side) and pull your left hand out and place it on the top of their shoulder.
7. Gently work the shoulder and scapula in all directions.
8. After a few minutes hold the area in sattvic.
9. Release and move to the opposite side. End with big toe pulls and transverse arch work.
C. Brachial Plexus Release (Option 2)
1. Client is positioned face down, prone. You begin on the client’s left side.
2. Gently move the muscles of the back to stimulate relaxation.
3. Place your right hand under your client’s anterior shoulder and lift upward, with your left hand on their scapula; begin to move it in all directions. This contact may lift the client’s scapula away from their ribs so that you can work all the muscles around and under the scapula.
4. An option here is to place a pillow, bolster or rolled up towel under the shoulder to raise the scapula, so that you can use both hands to work the scapula and to give it a slight pull toward you.
5. Hold in sattvic for a few minutes to allow muscle release and relaxation. Then proceed to the other side of your client.
